Porque una cosa es conocer la palabra «jacket» y otra muy distinta es poder decir «this jacket suits you perfectly» o «I need to try on these trousers».

VerboSignificadoEjemplo
WearLlevar puestoWhat are you wearing to the party tonight?
Put onPonerse (acción)It’s cold outside, put on your coat!
Take offQuitarsePlease take off your shoes before entering the house.
Try onProbarseCan I try on this dress, please?
FitQuedar bien (de talla)These jeans don’t fit me anymore.
SuitFavorecer, sentar bienThat colour really suits you!
MatchCombinar, hacer juegoYour shoes don’t match your handbag.
Get dressedVestirseHurry up and get dressed, we’re going to be late!
ChangeCambiarse de ropaI need to change before we go out.
Dress upArreglarse, vestirse eleganteWe need to dress up for the wedding.
Dress downVestir informalIt’s Friday, so we can dress down at work.
Suit upPonerse el traje (formal o informal)Suit up, gentlemen! We have an important meeting.
DonPonerse (formal/literario)The knight donned his armour before battle.

Diferencia importante: Muchos estudiantes confunden «wear» y «put on».

Can I help you?¿Puedo ayudarle?

Do you have this in a different colour?¿Tienen esto en otro color?

It’s too tight/loose.Me queda demasiado estrecho/holgado.
It’s too big/small.Es demasiado grande/pequeño.

I’ll take it.Me lo llevo.
Can I pay by card?¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta?
Can I have a receipt, please?¿Me da el recibo, por favor?

1. Confundir «wear» y «put on»

❌ «I’m wearing my coat now» (cuando te lo estás poniendo en ese momento)
✅ «I’m putting on my coat now»

Si dices «I need to buy new pants» en Londres, te estarán entendiendo que necesitas calzoncillos o bragas. Para pantalones, di «trousers».

3. Confundir «fit» y «suit»

❌ «This colour doesn’t fit you»
✅ «This colour doesn’t suit you»

Decimos «these jeans are», no «this jean is». Y cuando hablamos de cantidad, usamos «a pair of»: «I bought two pairs of jeans».

5. Pronunciar mal «clothes»

Practica: «close» + «th» = «clothes».

6. Decir «I have put» en vez de «I’m wearing»

❌ «I have put a blue shirt»
✅ «I’m wearing a blue shirt» o «I’ve got a blue shirt on»

7. No usar artículos correctamente

❌ «I’m wearing jeans» ✅ (correcto)
❌ «I’m wearing a jeans» ✗ (incorrecto)

Pero:

❌ «I’m wearing shirt» ✗ (incorrecto)
✅ «I’m wearing a shirt» ✓ (correcto)

8. Confundir «dress» (sustantivo) con «dress» (verbo)

❌ «I dress a beautiful dress»
✅ «I’m wearing a beautiful dress»

Por ejemplo: «Today I’m wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt and my favourite trainers».
  4. Crea historias absurdas: Nuestro cerebro recuerda mejor las cosas raras o divertidas. Inventa historias ridículas que conecten varias palabras. Por ejemplo: «My jumper fell in love with a cardigan, so they got married wearing matching scarves and gloves». Cuanto más absurda, mejor.
That man is wearing a dark blue suit and brown leather shoes», «She’s got a red coat and black boots».
Por ejemplo: «In this photo, the actress is wearing an elegant black dress with high heels and a clutch bag».
