Por qué necesitas vocabulario de música en inglés

Imagina esto: estás en un pub en Londres, y alguien te pregunta «What kind of music are you into?» Tú, entusiasmado, intentas explicar que te encanta ese grupo que mezcla rock alternativo con toques de folk y letras profundas, pero te quedas sin palabras. Acabas diciendo simplemente «I like rock» y la conversación muere ahí. ☠️

O peor aún: estás en un concierto increíble, la banda acaba de tocar un solo de guitarra espectacular, y quieres comentarlo con la persona de al lado, pero no sabes cómo expresar lo que acabas de sentir.

Aquí es donde entra en juego el vocabulario musical. No se trata solo de conocer palabras, sino de poder expresar tus emociones, tus gustos y tus experiencias relacionadas con la música. Y créeme, cuando dominas este vocabulario, las conversaciones se vuelven mucho más interesantes.

Lo primero es lo primero: necesitas poder hablar de lo que te gusta y lo que no. Al fin y al cabo, la música es algo muy personal, y expresar tus preferencias es esencial para conectar con otras personas.

Expresar lo que te gusta y lo que no

Aquí tienes varias formas de expresar tus gustos musicales, desde las más formales hasta las más coloquiales:

To be into something – Estar metido en algo, que te guste mucho (informal)

Tu gusto musical (taste in music)

Cuando hablas de tus preferencias musicales en general, utilizas la expresión taste in music.

Ejemplos:

Singer-songwriter – Cantautor

La anatomía de una canción

Ahora imaginemos que una amiga tuya, Sara, que ya conoce los instrumentos y los músicos, quiere poder hablar sobre las canciones en sí. ¿Qué partes tiene una canción? ¿Qué elementos la componen? Vamos a descubrirlo.

Estructura y partes de una canción

La mayoría de las canciones populares siguen una estructura similar. Aquí están las partes principales:

Verse – Estrofa

Es la parte de la canción que cuenta la historia. La melodía suele ser la misma en cada verso, pero la letra cambia.

Ejemplo: «The first verse introduces the main character of the song.»

Chorus – Estribillo

Es la parte que se repite, normalmente la más pegadiza y memorable de la canción. Tanto la melodía como la letra se mantienen iguales.

Ejemplo: «The chorus is so catchy that I can’t get it out of my head!»

Bridge – Puente

Una sección que proporciona contraste y conecta diferentes partes de la canción.

Ejemplo: «The bridge adds a nice change before the final chorus.»

Intro – Introducción

La parte instrumental al principio de la canción.

Outro – Final

La parte que cierra la canción.

Hook – Gancho

La parte más pegadiza de una canción, diseñada para «engancharte».

Ejemplo: «That song has one of the best hooks I’ve ever heard.»

Solo – Solo

Una sección donde un instrumento toca solo, mostrando las habilidades del músico.

Ejemplos:

  • «The guitar solo in that song is absolutely epic.»

Qué hace que una canción sea memorable

Ahora vamos con los elementos que componen una canción y que la hacen especial para tu amiga Sara.

Lyrics – Letra (siempre en plural en inglés)

Las palabras de una canción.

Ejemplos:

Melody – Melodía

La línea musical principal, la «tonada» que tarareas.

Ejemplos:

Tune – Tonada / melodía (más informal que melody)

Ejemplo: «That’s a really catchy tune!»

Collocations importantes:

Rhythm – Ritmo

El patrón de sonidos y silencios en la música.

Beat – Ritmo base / pulso

El pulso regular que marca el tempo de la música.

Riff – Riff

Una secuencia corta y repetida de notas, especialmente en guitarra.

Classical music – Música clásica

Pitch – Tono / altura

Qué tan aguda o grave es una nota.

Ejemplos:

  • High pitch – Tono agudo

Chord – Acorde

Tres o más notas tocadas al mismo tiempo.

Ejemplo: «This song only has three chords.»

Scale – Escala

Una secuencia de notas en orden ascendente o descendente.

Ejemplos:

  • Major scale – Escala mayor
  • Minor scale – Escala menor

Key – Tonalidad

El grupo de notas en el que está basada una pieza musical.

Ejemplos:

  • «This song is in the key of C major.»
  • «Can you play it in a different key?»

Octave – Octava

El intervalo entre una nota y la siguiente nota con el mismo nombre (8 notas de distancia).

Ejemplo: «She can sing two octaves higher than me.»

Sharp (#) – Sostenido

Sube una nota medio tono.

Ejemplo: «The song is in C sharp.»

Flat (♭) – Bemol

Baja una nota medio tono.

Ejemplo: «That’s a B flat, not a B.»

In tune / Out of tune – Afinado / desafinado

Staff / Stave – Pentagrama

Las cinco líneas horizontales donde se escriben las notas musicales.

Treble clef – Clave de sol

El símbolo que indica las notas agudas.

Bass clef – Clave de fa

El símbolo que indica las notas graves.

Bar / Measure – Compás

Una sección de música dividida por líneas verticales.

Time signature – Compás (indicación del tiempo)

Los números al principio de una pieza que indican el ritmo.

Cuando algo te resulta vagamente familiar.

Ejemplo: «Does the name Sarah Johnson ring a bell? I think we met her at the party.»

Strike a chord (with someone) – Tocar la fibra sensible

Crear una respuesta emocional en alguien.

Hacer algo sin un plan fijo, decidiendo según vaya surgiendo.

Repetir lo mismo una y otra vez.

Ejemplo: «I know, I know! You sound like a broken record. You’ve told me a hundred times!»

Blow your own trumpet / Toot your own horn – Darse bombo

Presumir de tus propios logros.

Ejemplo: «I don’t want to blow my own trumpet, but I did get the highest mark in the class.»

For a song – Por cuatro duros / muy barato

Comprar algo muy barato.

Ejemplo: «I bought this guitar for a song at a car boot sale.»

March to the beat of your own drum – Ir a tu aire

Hacer las cosas a tu manera, sin seguir a los demás.

Ejemplo: «She’s always marched to the beat of her own drum. She doesn’t care what others think.»

It’s not over until the fat lady sings – Hasta que no canta la gorda

No está terminado hasta que realmente termina (referencia a la ópera).

Ejemplo: «We’re losing 2-0, but it’s not over until the fat lady sings!»

And all that jazz – Y todo eso

Cuando todos están de acuerdo y dicen lo mismo.

Describir música como un profesional

Ahora que Sara conoce todos los elementos técnicos, quiere poder describir la música de forma más sofisticada. Ya no quiere limitarse a decir «I like this song». Quiere poder explicar exactamente qué tiene de especial y cómo le hace sentir.

Hablar del sonido y el estilo

Respuestas emocionales a la música

La música nos hace sentir. Aquí tienes vocabulario para expresar esas emociones:

To get goosebumps / To give you goosebumps – Ponerte la piel de gallina

Ejemplo: «That song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.»

To get emotional – Emocionarse

Ejemplo: «I always get emotional when I hear this song.»

To bring tears to your eyes – Hacerte llorar

Ejemplo: «The lyrics are so beautiful they bring tears to my eyes.»

To lift your spirits – Levantarte el ánimo

Ejemplo: «This upbeat song always lifts my spirits when I’m feeling down.»

To cheer you up – Animarte

Ejemplo: «Listening to my favourite band always cheers me up.»

To pump you up – Motivarte / ponerte las pilas

Ejemplo: «I listen to rock music before the gym to pump me up.»

To calm you down / To relax you – Calmarte / relajarte

To get stuck in your head – Quedarse en tu cabeza

Cuando no puedes dejar de tararear o pensar en una canción.

Earworm – Canción pegadiza que no puedes sacarte de la cabeza

Ejemplo: «That song is such an earworm! I’ve been humming it for days.»

To resonate with someone – Resonar con alguien / conectar emocionalmente

Ejemplo: «The lyrics really resonate with me because I’ve been through something similar.»

To speak to you – Hablarte (emocionalmente)

Ejemplo: «This song really speaks to me on a deep level.»
