Como probablemente ya sabrás, si has leído otros artículos de este blog, me encanta el idioma inglés: la gramática, el vocabulario, etc. ¡Incluso me encantan los malditos phrasal verbs en inglés! Debo de estar un poco loco. En fin, hoy voy a enseñarte el concepto de los trinomios en inglés, que son un poco raros pero están presentes aquí y allá en la lengua inglesa, ¡así que he pensado que también podrían interesarte!

¿Qué son los trinomios en inglés?

Los trinomios en inglés son expresiones idiomáticas populares que constan de tres palabras principales que aparecen juntas en un orden fijo. Así que son básicamente colocaciones fijas de tres palabras en inglés. Por ejemplo: drugs, sex and rock’n’roll.

¿De dónde viene la palabra trinomio?

El prefijo latino «tri-» se refiere a «tener tres» y «-nomio» deriva del griego «nomos», que significa «parte» o «porción». Y, como habrás adivinado, también tenemos binomios en inglés.

Trinomios en inglés: significados y frases de ejemplo

beg, borrow and steal

• Significado: Hacer lo que sea necesario para conseguir algo muy deseado.
• Ejemplo: «I’m gonna get the money to buy Casey’s ring, even if I have to beg, borrow, or steal.»

blood, sweat and tears

• Significado: Trabajo extremadamente duro; esfuerzo incansable.
• Ejemplo: «He’s going through all the blood, sweat, and tears involved in getting a PhD.»

cool, calm and collected

• Significado: No estar alterado ni muy molesto por las cosas.
• Ejemplo: «My brother is always calm, cool, and collected.»

could’ve, would’ve, should’ve

• Significado: Se usa en respuesta a alguien que pone excusas, queriendo decir que no se puede cambiar el pasado.
• Ejemplo:

• Significado: Un proverbio que promueve disfrutar de la vida en el momento, comúnmente dicho en una fiesta u otra reunión festiva. Es la primera parte de un proverbio más largo: «Come, bebe y sé feliz, que mañana moriremos».
• Ejemplo: «Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we may die.»

• Significado: Tener un efecto positivo, negativo o nulo. A menudo se utiliza para plantear una pregunta sobre algo, especialmente en los títulos de los artículos.
