Have vs Had: ¿Cuál es la diferencia?

La diferencia entre «have» y «had» es simplemente que «have» es el infinitivo y la forma de presente, mientras que «had» es la forma de pasado o participio pasado. Y esto determina exactamente cómo usamos cada uno de ellos. Veámoslo en las siguientes secciones.

¿Cuándo usamos Have y Had?

Usamos «have»:

• Como verbo principal en el Present Simple, con todas las personas excepto la tercera:

I have many friends.
They have breakfast together every morning.

• Como verbo principal en el Future Simple:

I’m sure you will have a lot of fun with your friends.
She will have your stuff ready when you arrive.

• Como verbo auxiliar en los tiempos perfectos en presente, futuro y con modales.

I have eaten pasta today. (Present Perfect Simple)
We have been working all day. (Present Perfect Continuous)
I will have done my homework by the time you arrive. (Future Perfect Simple)
They will have been running for 5 hours when the bell rings. (Future Perfect Continuous)
They must have missed their train. They should be here by now. (Perfect Modal)

Usamos «had»:

• Como verbo principal en el tiempo Past Simple:

I had a lot of fun last night. Thanks for the party!
We had a great holiday!

• Como verbo principal (en la forma de participio pasado) en los tiempos perfectos simples en presente, futuro y con modales perfectos. Fíjate que aquí también necesitamos usar «have» como verbo auxiliar:

I have had pasta for lunch today. (Present Perfect Simple)
I will have had a shower by the time you arrive. (Future Perfect Simple)
They might have had some problems to print the tickets. (Perfect Modal)

• Como verbo auxiliar en los tiempos pluscuamperfectos:

I was tired because I had been at work all day. (Past Perfect Simple)
I was tired because I had been working all day. (Past Perfect Continuous)

¿Have had o Had had?

Bueno, la respuesta aquí es realmente simple: «have/has had» es el Present Perfect Simple de Have, mientras que «had had» es el Past Perfect Simple de Have. La particularidad aquí es que el verbo Have actúa tanto como auxiliar como verbo principal, en ambos casos:

• Have en el Present Perfect Simple:

I have had enough to eat for the next three days. I’m stuffed!
They’ve had a lot of arguments recently.

• Have en el Past Perfect Simple:

If I had had any idea, I would have told you.
They would’ve come if they hadn’t had a change of heart.
