Are you ready to certify the highest level of English that exists? The LanguageCert C2 Mastery is the certification that proves full mastery of the English language, equivalent to the C2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It is a flexible exam that you can take in person or completely online from home.

The C2 level of English, also known as the mastery level or mastery, represents the pinnacle of learning English as a foreign language. It is the level that allows you to communicate with the same precision and fluency as an educated native speaker, to function in highly demanding academic environments, and to access the most competitive professional opportunities internationally. In this article, I am going to explain everything you need to know about the LanguageCert C2 Mastery, its parts, its format, how it is assessed and, of course, I will provide you with several PDF exams so you can practise.

What is the LanguageCert C2 Mastery Exam

The LanguageCert C2 Mastery exam is the C2 level exam of the LanguageCert International ESOL series. Through this exam, the four language skills (skills) of the candidates are assessed: listening, reading, writing and speaking. This exam is designed for those who wish to certify an exceptional command of English, equivalent to the C2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

It is the most advanced level of language proficiency in English, appropriate for functioning with total effectiveness and naturalness in any context, however complex or specialised it may be. It is a level highly valued by the most prestigious universities, multinational companies and international institutions around the world.

What Level Does C2 Mastery Certify

The objective of the LanguageCert International ESOL C2 Mastery is to certify mastery level linguistic competence, as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). In this sense, LanguageCert summarises this level in the following competencies:

  • Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read.
  • Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation.
  • Can express themselves spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.
  • Can use the language fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.
  • Can respond to extensive information and narratives, follow detailed explanations and complex instructions, adapting their response to the audience, medium and context.
  • Can take part in discussions in a variety of situations, making clear and effective contributions.
  • Can use language flexibly and communicate ideas and opinions effectively, appropriate to purpose, content and audience.

In short, if you manage to pass the LanguageCert C2 Mastery, it means you have an internationally recognised certification of the highest level of English. This level allows you to function with total confidence and naturalness in any academic, professional or social environment in English, being able to express subtle nuances of meaning and participate in discussions on complex and abstract topics with the same effectiveness as a highly qualified native speaker.

C2 Mastery: Exams and Modalities

Exams

Like the rest of the levels certified by LanguageCert International ESOL, the C2 Mastery consists of 2 independent exams. And each exam constitutes a certification in itself:

  • Written Exam: Assesses Listening, Reading and Writing.
  • Spoken Exam: Assesses Speaking.

Modalities

One of the distinguishing features of LanguageCert is that it offers three different modalities to take the International ESOL exams. Therefore, the C2 Mastery can be taken in the following ways:

  • In person: at an exam centre (usually an academy)
    • Computer-based
    • Paper-based
  • Online: from your home

And the important thing about this is that in all cases the candidate is being supervised by a qualified person to guarantee the security and integrity of the results. 🙂

Parts of the LanguageCert C2 Mastery

Below I present all the parts of the LanguageCert C2 Mastery. Keep in mind that I am going to describe all parts together, but you must remember that the Speaking is done separately.

In summary, the LanguageCert C2 Mastery exam is organised as follows:

  • Listening: 4 activities (26 questions)
  • Reading: 4 activities (26 questions)
  • Writing: 2 activities (2 tasks)
  • Speaking: 4 activities

Let’s move on to look at each part of the exam in more detail.

C2 Mastery: Listening

  • Tasks: 4 activities
  • No. of items: 26 questions
  • Duration: Approximately 30 minutes

Candidates must demonstrate that they understand practically everything they hear, even when the speed of speech is fast. The C2 Mastery Listening assesses the ability to follow both formal and informal conversations in a wide range of situations, understand sophisticated and subtle narratives and arguments, recognise language functions in expressions that may contain idiomatic or colloquial English, and follow complex discussions even when they are not clearly structured.

The C2 Mastery Listening is divided into the following parts:

Part 1

  • No. of questions: 6
  • Description: You hear 6 short sentences twice, including statements, explanations, descriptions, instructions or questions, each with a different function and context. Two items include idiomatic expressions, colloquialisms, changes in register and the use of accent and intonation to indicate attitudes. One of the items is formal. You must choose the most appropriate response (A, B or C) to complete or continue each conversation.

Part 2

  • No. of questions: 6
  • Description: You hear 3 conversations, each with two speakers, twice. You must identify the topic, purpose, context, speakers, general idea, relationship between the speakers, roles, functions, attitudes, feelings and opinions. For each conversation, there are 2 multiple-choice questions (A, B or C).

Part 3

  • No. of questions: 7
  • Description: You hear a lecture, radio broadcast, narrative, presentation, etc. twice to identify specific information. The listening text contains dense factual information. You must write down the answers (from 1 to 5 words) in a note, message box or form with 7 headings and space to write the correct information for each heading.

Part 4

  • No. of questions: 7
  • Description: You hear a discussion between two speakers twice to identify the general idea, examples, facts, opinions, contrasts, purposes, key ideas, attitudes, cause and effect. There are 7 multiple-choice questions (A, B or C).

C2 Mastery: Reading

  • Tasks: 4 activities
  • No. of items: 26 questions
  • Duration: 2 hours and 40 minutes (taken together with Writing, without a break)

In this part of the C2 Mastery, candidates must demonstrate that they can easily understand virtually all types of authentic written texts for different purposes and styles, including those dense in complex structures. They must also be able to understand the main ideas of all types of written language, including extensive abstract, structurally or linguistically complex or highly idiomatic texts, literary and non-literary, on a wide range of professional, academic and social topics.

The C2 Mastery Reading is divided into the following parts:

Part 1

  • No. of questions: 5
  • Description: You read a text that includes metaphors, similes and idiomatic language, literary narrative or academic ideas, arguments and opinions. You must determine whether 5 statements about the text are true or false.

Part 2

  • No. of questions: 6
  • Description: You must read a text with 6 deleted sentences (e.g., topic sentence, summary sentence, idea development, emphasis of a point, opinion, contrast, sequence, forward and backward reference, transition to a new idea). 8 sentences are provided to choose from (two are distractors). You must complete the 6 gaps with the appropriate sentences.

Part 3

  • No. of questions: 7
  • Description: There are 4 short texts (e.g., email, article, advertisement, brochure) with a common theme but different purposes. There are 7 questions and you must indicate which text (A, B, C or D) provides the answer to each question.

Part 4

  • No. of questions: 8
  • Description: You read a continuous text: narrative, descriptive, explanatory, expository, biographical or instructional. You must answer 8 open-ended «wh-« type questions that require short answers of up to 5 words.

C2 Mastery: Writing

  • Tasks: 2 Writing activities
  • Duration: 2 hours and 40 minutes (taken together with Reading, without a break)

In the C2 Mastery Writing, candidates must complete 2 Writing tasks, always responding and adjusting to a series of prior instructions. The tasks assess the ability to write well-structured texts on complex or abstract topics, write clear and fluent formal letters, reports or articles in styles completely appropriate to the purpose and the intended reader, and demonstrate consistent control of complex grammatical structures and a very wide range of vocabulary.

Part 1

  • Length: 200 – 250 words
  • Description: Instructions are given to write a letter, report, argument or article using a written, graphic or visual text as input and specifying the intended reader. You must express a stance, opinion, justification and argumentation as appropriate. It involves producing a formal response for an intended public audience.

Part 2

  • Length: 250 – 300 words
  • Description: Instructions are given to write a personal letter, a narrative composition/story or a descriptive composition. You must produce an informal piece of writing for a specific reader in order to persuade, argue or hypothesise, expressing state of mind, opinion, justification, evaluation, etc.

C2 Mastery: Speaking

  • Tasks: 4 parts
  • Duration: 17 minutes

The LanguageCert C2 Mastery Speaking exam is individual, unlike the Cambridge exams, and is conducted face-to-face with an interlocutor (even in the online version). One of the particularities of this exam is that the interlocutor is only in charge of conducting the exam, not of assessing it. It is recorded and sent to be assessed by specialised and qualified examiners.

The C2 Mastery Speaking exam is divided into the following parts:

Part 1

In this part, at the start of the exam, the candidate must:

  • Say their name and spell it.
  • Indicate their country of origin.
  • Answer 5 questions.

The questions are grouped under five themes and allow the candidate to respond by giving personal information, ideas and opinions on a variety of topics, including contemporary issues. This part should produce a natural interaction in the allotted time.

Part 2

The interlocutor presents 2 or more situations to which the candidate must respond and initiate interactions. The candidate must communicate appropriately in real-life situations using a wide range of functional language and demonstrating appropriate use of register. This part assesses the ability to use a wide variety of linguistic functions.

Part 3

Consists of holding a brief discussion to make a plan, organise or decide something using a written text as a stimulus. The candidate must participate in the discussion, justify, challenge and persuade when expressing and requesting opinions. This is a high-level discursive task that requires advanced negotiation and interaction skills.

Part 4

The candidate has 30 seconds of preparation time. Then, they must speak on a topic provided by the interlocutor for 3 minutes. At the end, they must answer a series of follow-up questions asked by the interlocutor. The objective is to demonstrate the ability to speak in depth about a topic from a wide range of abstract and complex subjects, providing sophisticated explanations, descriptions and narratives.

How the LanguageCert C2 Mastery is Assessed

In general, it is quite simple to calculate the LanguageCert C2 Mastery score, and it works the same as in the rest of the LanguageCert International ESOL exams. But first, let’s present the score for each part:

Written Exam Assessment (Listening, Reading and Writing)

  • Listening: 26 marks (1 question = 1 mark)
  • Reading: 26 marks (1 question = 1 mark)
  • Writing: 24 marks (1 activity = 12 marks)

Writing is assessed according to four criteria aligned with the CEFR descriptors:

  • Task Fulfilment: Measures to what extent the candidate has completed/addressed the task and if the candidate has done what was requested.
  • Accuracy and Range of Grammar: Measures the range, appropriateness and accuracy of the grammar.
  • Accuracy and Range of Vocabulary: Measures the range, accuracy and appropriateness of the vocabulary, as well as spelling accuracy.
  • Organisation: Measures how ideas are coherently linked in the text and how accurate the punctuation is.

Spoken Exam Assessment (Speaking)

  • Speaking: 12 marks (global)

The ESOL oral exams are assessed according to the following four criteria:

  • Task Fulfilment and Coherence: The ability to manage tasks appropriately for the level and link expressions in a coherent discourse.
  • Accuracy and Range of Grammar: The ability to vary and demonstrate control of grammatical structures according to the task.
  • Accuracy and Range of Vocabulary: The ability to vary and demonstrate control of the lexicon and register according to the task.
  • Pronunciation, Intonation and Fluency: The ability to produce the sounds of English to be understood with appropriate stress and intonation and maintain the flow of speech.

Each of the four parts of the exam is given equal importance. Candidates receive a score from 0 to 3 for each of the four criteria, so the maximum raw scores they can obtain in the four parts of the exam is 12. Scores are subsequently converted to a scale of 0 to 50.

Grading Scale

Next, each score obtained must be equated to 50 points. For example:

  • Listening: 22 marks → We calculate 22/26×50 = 42 points (approximately).
  • Reading: 20 marks → We calculate 20/26×50 = 38 points (approximately).
  • Writing: 18 marks → We calculate 18/24×50 = 37 points (approximately).
  • Speaking: 10 marks → We calculate 10/12×50 = 42 points (approximately).

And now we add everything up for each exam. Remember we have Written (Listening, Reading and Writing) and Spoken (Speaking).

  • Written: 42 (L) + 38 (R) + 37 (W) = 117 points
  • Spoken: 42 points

And finally, we compare it to the LanguageCert scale, valid for all levels:

Written Exam:

  • Fail: 0 – 74 points
  • Pass: 75 – 100 points
  • High Pass: 101 – 150 points

Spoken Exam:

  • Fail: 0 – 24 points
  • Pass: 25 – 37 points
  • High Pass: 38 – 50 points

According to this, we would have obtained the following grade in the C2 Mastery:

  • Written Exam: High Pass
  • Spoken Exam: High Pass
